UCLA Scholar-Athletes Honored

UCLA honored its top scholar-athletes on May 2 at the 10th Annual UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet, sponsored by the late Rose Gilbert in memory of Maggie Gilbert.

Cross Country/Track & Field's Sean Davis and swimmer Arlyn Upshaw were awarded the Scholar-Athletes of the Year as the male and female graduating seniors with the highest cumulative GPA. The other finalists for the award were Jake Reeves (Men's Volleyball), Ryoto Tachi (Men's Tennis), John Zappia (Men's Volleyball), Paige Cheung (Rowing), Alice White (Rowing) and Yvonne Zheng (Women's Golf).

Davis, Upshaw, Reeves and Cheung were also honored with the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award for making the Director's Honor Roll (3.0 or higher GPA) every quarter they were at UCLA. Also receiving this distinction were Kelly Brooks (Track & Field), Julie Consani (Beach Volleyball), Rachel Inouye (Women's Volleyball/Beach Volleyball), Katie Kinnear (Swimming & Diving), Kyle McPhillips (Women's Tennis), Rachel Owen (Swimming & Diving), Keenan Pierandozzi-Howes (Baseball), Kamila Tan (Beach Volleyball), Logan Warwick (Rowing) and Alice White (Rowing).

Twenty-three student-athletes were named to the All-Academic team, which is comprised of the person from each team with the highest cumulative GPA. The overall GPA of the 2015-16 UCLA All-Academic team is 3.65. All-Academic team honorees were third-year winners Kari Korver (Women's Basketball) and Inouye; second-year winners Thomas Schwab (Football), Zheng, Torie Owers (Women’s Track & Field), Davis, Jennie Frager (Women’s Volleyball) and Patrick Woepse (Men’s Water Polo); and first-year honorees Daniel Rosica (Baseball), Jerrold Smith (Men's Basketball), Brandon Mai (Men's Golf), Mikaela Gerber (Gymnastics), Jasmine English (Rowing), Michael Amick (Men's Soccer), Chloe Hemingway (Women's Soccer), Izzy Ordorica (Softball), Annika Lenz (Swimming & Diving), Martin Redlicki (Men's Tennis), McPhillips, Scott Snow (Men's Track & Field), Brooks, Zappia and Grace Reego (Women's Water Polo).

Football's Marcus Rios and Men's Tennis' Gage Brymer earned the Rose Gilbert Courage and Character Award, presented to student-athletes who were confronted with significant obstacles outside the classroom, met their challenge with courage and strength and were able to successfully overcome the challenge while still excelling academically.

Gymnast Sadiqua Bynum and football player Kenneth Walker III received the Maggie Gilbert Academic Achievement Award. The award is presented to student-athletes who have shown tremendous growth throughout their academic career at UCLA and demonstrated relentless perseverance and commitment to their academic endeavors.

Woepse, Trinity Wilson (Women's Track & Field), Kene Orjioke (Football) and Danusia Francis (Gymnastics) earned the Bruin Leadership Award, presented to student-athletes who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make a significant impact on the UCLA student-athlete experience and demonstrated outstanding service to others and within the community.

Inouye and Daniel McClintick (Men's Water Polo) earned the AS2 “S.U.C.C.E.S.S.” (Student-Athletes Understand that Character Creates Educational Self-Sufficiency) Award, given to student-athletes who have developed into self-sufficient, independent learners and who utilize the communication, decision-making and leadership skills learned through the S.U.C.E.S.S. program to successfully meet their academic and personal goals.

UCLA student-athletes in the 2016 winter and 2015 fall quarters combined to earn 613 spots on the Director's Honor Roll. In the winter quarter, 116 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or better, with 15 earning a perfect 4.0. In the fall, 101 student-athletes earned a 3.5 GPA or better, with seven earning a perfect 4.0.
